This is not a historical outfit, per-say. It is cataloged as "Red, silver and blue satin acetate girl's patriotic dance costume, American Girl, 1989-1991" not as for Molly's time period.

The other AG items are tagged the same way. For example: "White cotton middy-style dress, 2-piece, American Girl, 1989-1991"

I imagine they got a good amount of ideas from the museum, but also Ms. Rowland is a huge benefactor of the museum, so it is possible that many of the early AG inspiration items were donated to the museum after the idea was taken.
